A cautionary tale for young ladies out there....
I have been doing a lot of travelling for work and my colleagues are young males. For some reason they seem to see me as one of the boys. I have no issue with this as they tend to relax around and act like they do when there are no women around.
I must say that I'm glad that I'm not part of the generation of women that is being preyed upon by these young guys. Maybe I'm old fashioned but when did it become OK,.... no "the norm" for men to tread women like objects to be used and discarded on a whim.
Case in point, on the third day of our 5 day research project one of the guys complained of how sexually frustrated he was. This is someone who is a bit of a rolling stone and always brags about his conquests to the extent that I would wonder, why... While at a local 'tshisa nyama' which is barbecue for the non South Africans he arrives with this girl that he's just picked up fabricating a story of their being long lost loves who've been apart for the past 8 years. I laugh at this and am amazed at her playing along. I wonder what possesses her to trust her life to someone she has just met to the extent of going with us back to our accommodation.
She eventually spends the night with him. The entire time when we were back at the bed&breakfast he was attentive and utterly charming. He was the perfect gentleman, considerate and chivalrous! I both shocked and impressed as to the lengths he took this to, never thought he had it in him. Even the following day as we were preparing to leave for the field he still looked after her, had taken the clothes she was wearing and put them in the washer so that she would at least not have 'walk of shame' written all over her. Now from all of this I could see this girl's barriers going down and that was her second mistake!
As soon as she warmed up to him he dropped her like a hot potato and in the worst way possible. We decided to go for some snacks before hitting the road and went to the local supermarket, when we got there he met up with an actual ex and completely ignored her. I have no idea when she left or how she left because by the time we left the supermarket she was nowhere to be found and he did not care. His exact words were "I wanted to use her, I did and now don't care what's happened to her. In fact she has done both of us a favour". ........Damn, that's cold!
